Our Story

Growcer Co-founders Corey Ellis and Alida Burke

It all started in 2015…

After experiencing first-hand how the high cost of fresh, healthy food was hurting Canadians in the North, our founders made it their mission to make local, fresh produce accessible to all, no matter the climate.

With no feasible food system solutions on the market, they decided to build one themselves.

Growcer expands world wide

What started as a northern solution quickly proved to be an universal one. Schools, hospitals, Indigenous nations, and communities across North America saw the same opportunity: the ability to grow fresh, nutritious food year-round, on their own terms.

We grew alongside our partners, adding storage infrastructure, distribution hubs, training programs and funding procurement support. Because we learned that hardware alone doesn't build food resiliency. Communities need a full ecosystem.

In 2025, Growcer acquired Freight Farms, bringing together two trailblazers in modular food infrastructure. Today, we power the world's largest network of local food builders, with 1,000+ farms across 30 countries and over 85 Indigenous community partnerships in North America.

Local, secure food for all.

Our approach is one of empowerment and collaboration. We provide you with the tools and technologies you need, while supporting the process with expert advice. Every community is different, and consequently, every project we take on is unique and tailored to local goals and needs.

Growcer now employs more than 30 staff and partners with hundreds of growers across the world to grow fresh produce year-round.

“We are relying completely on air travel for all of our food to come into the community. If there is a blizzard or something where planes were not able to land, having this kind of food production happening onsite in our community, I think, is really incredible.“
